Ranking of medium-sized centres: The CCI determines the top locations in the region
Economically-related urban area rankings provide a good overview of the strengths and weaknesses of certain cities and even of whole regions, and have thus also become an important benchmark for the orientation of regional economic policy. For the first time, the Darmstadt Rhine Main Neckar CCI has examined all the medium-sized centres in the region and compared them with each other.
What is a medium-sized centre?
The classification as a „medium-sized centre” is carried out by the government of the German state in question. The factors which play an important part in the classification are for example, the number of inhabitants, the size of the catchment area and the infrastructure facilities. In this respect, the towns which were examined basically have a comparable volume of cultural, sport, educative and administrative institutions. The Darmstadt CCI understands here medium-sized towns with particular attributes affecting the commercial situation.
The CCI examined 19 medium-sized towns in the region according to 35 economic and structural indicators. How attractive are the medium-sized centres for commerce and industry? What is the situation with regard to jobs, retailers for shopping and the availability of unoccupied industrial land? Do the location conditions for commerce and industry in the medium-sized centres also reach a comparable standard?
The medium-sized centre ranking of the Darmstadt CCI provides answers to all these questions. The survey creates transparency with the intention of stimulating the political discussion concerning local conditions affecting business location. We want to use the results to carry out constructive discussions on the future development of the medium-sized centres and to promote active economic policies at the municipal level which are compatible with business needs. From this, our intention is to achieve an improvement in the location conditions for our member companies.
